集會(huì)/Assembly

　　每周一的集會(huì)是我們威力塔斯的傳統(tǒng)，自從我來(lái)到這里幾乎沒(méi)斷過(guò)。本期集會(huì)，以朋友身份陪伴在我們身邊的張皓校長(zhǎng)提到‘準(zhǔn)時(shí)’這個(gè)主題。因?yàn)橛袀�(gè)別同學(xué)患有比較嚴(yán)重的‘遲到癥’。張校強(qiáng)調(diào)我們不僅要準(zhǔn)時(shí)，而且要‘超準(zhǔn)時(shí)’，在上課鈴響之前就做好一切準(zhǔn)備工作，這不僅是對(duì)老師的尊重，也是對(duì)自己的尊重。良好的習(xí)慣將會(huì)使我們受益終身!集會(huì)上校長(zhǎng)還特別介紹了華中師范大學(xué)的實(shí)習(xí)老師團(tuán)隊(duì)來(lái)威力塔斯幫助我們學(xué)習(xí)和課業(yè)輔導(dǎo)，對(duì)他們表示熱烈歡迎!

　　he assemblies at Veritas are one of our traditions. They’ve barely stopped since I come here. This time, Mr. Larry who accompanies us as a friend brought up the topic of ‘punctuality’. Since some students have been late for classes, Mr. Larry emphasized it and showed us that not only should we be on time, but that we should be super on time, meaning we have to finish preparing everything that will probably be used on class. This is also a show of respect to our teachers and ourselves. The habit of being punctual will be beneficial for our whole life. In this assembly, Mr. Larry also introduced intern teachers from Central China Normal University who will be helping us to study and providing tutoring. Let’s welcome them!

　　科學(xué)節(jié)預(yù)告/Science Fair Preview

　　一轉(zhuǎn)眼，大半個(gè)學(xué)期就消失的無(wú)影無(wú)蹤了。在我們努力學(xué)習(xí)之余，各項(xiàng)有趣的活動(dòng)也在競(jìng)相展開(kāi)。為了讓同學(xué)們更好地融入美國(guó)校園生活并進(jìn)一步熟悉美國(guó)的各項(xiàng)比賽，外教Mr. Jamis向?qū)W校提出申請(qǐng)，在一月份舉辦Science Fair、奧林匹克科學(xué)節(jié)和講解自己喜愛(ài)的科學(xué)家的研究成果這一系列有趣的科學(xué)活動(dòng)。Science Fair主要展示并講解自己做的實(shí)驗(yàn);奧林匹克科學(xué)節(jié)將會(huì)是一場(chǎng)精彩的科學(xué)競(jìng)技比賽;參加第三個(gè)活動(dòng)的演講者將會(huì)扮演并以自己喜愛(ài)的科學(xué)家的身份來(lái)分析“自己”的研究成果。讓我們拭目以待吧!

　　In the twinkling of an eye, most of the semester has flown by us. When we study hard in school, all kinds of on-campus activities are also launched at the same time. In order to help us fit in American campus life, and become familiar with a traditional of American competition, Mr. Jamis asked the school to hold three interesting activities in January. These programs include the Science Fair, the Olympic Scientific Festival and an explanation of the research results of your favorite scientists. In the Science Fair, we will display the experiments that we completed in this semester; during the Olympic Scientific Festival, there will be a brilliant competition; and during the last activity, students will mimic their favorite scientists and describe “their” experiments to us. Let us wait and see in January!

　　翻譯志愿者活動(dòng)/Translation of volunteer activities

　　本周，翻譯志愿者小組活動(dòng)重新啟動(dòng)，小組成員們代表學(xué)校周末去美國(guó)大使館做翻譯志愿者工作。周三晚，學(xué)校對(duì)即將參加大使館翻譯活動(dòng)項(xiàng)目的同學(xué)做了一次集體培訓(xùn)，本次培訓(xùn)由張皓校長(zhǎng)主講。參與培訓(xùn)的同學(xué)都拿到了本次活動(dòng)需要介紹的幾所的美國(guó)大學(xué)的資料，張校通過(guò)逐句中英互譯的方法來(lái)考驗(yàn)同學(xué)們對(duì)翻譯技巧的熟練程度，以及同學(xué)們對(duì)專業(yè)詞匯的緊急應(yīng)變能力。培訓(xùn)結(jié)束后，同學(xué)們都對(duì)語(yǔ)言的藝術(shù)感到奇妙和贊嘆!周五，學(xué)校對(duì)翻譯志愿者們進(jìn)行了考試選拔，同學(xué)們都認(rèn)真對(duì)待，積極配合!

　　This week, we reactivated our translation volunteer group. The members will be translating for a few famous U.S. universities in the American embassy this weekend. On Wednesday, our Principle, Mr. Larry, announced the students who will be the official interpreters. Each student has their own introduction for the colleges assigned to them. Mr. Larry made students translate English to Chinese in order to examine if the students can interpret in a correct way and show an ability to select specific nouns or not. Every interpreter realized how marvelous the art of language is. On Friday, we had a screening test to select the perfect candidates, and we all took it seriously and cooperated actively.

　　物理實(shí)驗(yàn)課-自制冰淇淋/Physics experiment - The Making of Ice Cream

　　物理實(shí)驗(yàn)課一直是八年級(jí)同學(xué)最向往的，每次課程同學(xué)們都能通過(guò)簡(jiǎn)單的操作理解不簡(jiǎn)單的物理原理。本周四，八年級(jí)的同學(xué)們?cè)贛r. Jamis帶領(lǐng)下進(jìn)行了一次“美味”實(shí)驗(yàn)，即自制冰淇淋。外教老師向同學(xué)們?cè)敿?xì)講解了制作冰淇淋的程序和細(xì)節(jié)要求。同學(xué)們以奶油、煉乳、奧利奧餅干為原材料，饒有興趣的開(kāi)始了制作。首先，他們用打蛋器將稀奶油進(jìn)行充分?jǐn)嚢柚琳吵頎�，加入煉乳并混合均勻。然后同學(xué)們用力將奧利奧餅干壓碎，并將其加入奶油煉乳中再次混合均勻。最后放入冰箱冷凍。這個(gè)過(guò)程讓同學(xué)們了解到物質(zhì)形態(tài)的變化和相互作用。第二天，大家都迫不及待的打開(kāi)冰箱，一個(gè)大大的驚喜迎面而來(lái)，一切都的超乎想象。同學(xué)們?cè)谝黄鹩淇斓姆窒碜约簞趧?dòng)成果的，一股小小的成就感和喜悅也洋溢在大家開(kāi)心的笑臉上，能看出來(lái)有多美味吧?

　　Physics is always the eighth graders’ favorite class. With each class they begin to understand new, abstract concepts through simple experiments. On Thursday’s Physical Science class, the Eighth Graders conducted a “delicious” experiment named “The Making of Ice Cream”. Mr. Warren taught the students about the procedures and specifics of how to produce ice cream. With whipping cream, condensed milk, Oreo Cookies as raw materials, the students took great enthusiasm to create their special piece of art step by step. Firstly, they used an electric mixer (generously and graciously provided by the benevolent and beautiful Mr. Kelsor) to thoroughly beat the whipping cream until it became as thick as possible. Secondly, a tube of condensed milk was added to the thick cream, and the mixture was completely beaten afterwards. Thirdly, the students crushed the Oreo cookies and added them to the mixture. Lastly, they put it into the freezer for deep freezing. On the following day, the students took great delight to open the freezer and got a big surprise, it was perfect, far beyond their expectation. Then they shared the ice cream together happily. And at the same time, a sense of accomplishment was created among them as well. Can you see how delicious it is?

　　Mr. Kelsor

　　Mr. Kelsor是Veritas的教學(xué)副校長(zhǎng)，也是我們的任課老師。身為副校長(zhǎng)，他總是熱心的關(guān)注我們的校園生活，盡自己所能幫助我們解決遇到的問(wèn)題。身為我們班的寫(xiě)作課老師，他的課堂生動(dòng)有趣、引人入勝、深入淺出，使我們能夠在活潑的課堂氛圍中輕松地吸收所有知識(shí)，潛移默化地提高英文寫(xiě)作水平。在課下，Mr. Kelsor作為我們的朋友，幽默、平易近人，總能看到我們和他打成一片。在此我們特別感謝Mr. Kelsor對(duì)我們的教導(dǎo)!

　　Mr. Kelsor is our vice-principle, as well as our composition teacher. As the vice-principle, he always enthusiastically cares for our campus life, trying his best to tide us over the problems and difficulties we meet on campus. As the composition instructor, his lecture is always vividly demonstrated, intriguing for every student who is taking his class. This jovial atmosphere which he created enables us to absorb and digest information effectively and improve our English unconsciously. After class, Mr. Kelsor is always amendable, and he has a good sense of humor. We all like to hang out with him. I love Mr. Kelsor, thank you!

　　不用眨巴眼睛，你沒(méi)看錯(cuò)，我們的確有普拉提課!因天氣原因，本周威力塔斯的籃球課轉(zhuǎn)換為普拉提課(瑜伽)。普拉提可不是女生的專項(xiàng)哦，男女老少皆宜，來(lái)看看我們課堂的師生風(fēng)采吧!

　　You don’t need to blink your eyes. You read correctly! We have Pilates class! Starting from this week, the basketball class will be substituted be our new Pilates (yoga) class due to the chilly weather. Pilates isn’t just for girls either! It can be performed regardless of your age and gender. Let’s take a look at the elegant demeanor of our yoga teacher and students!
