　　Dear primary school parents and families,

　　親愛的小學(xué)家長(zhǎng)們

　　Welcome back! It is great to see our staff and students refreshed after the winter holidays and ready to begin a new semester of teaching and learning. There are only 20 weeks in this semester, so it is important that we make the most of every teaching and learning opportunity.Our new students have settled in well and I am sure many have already made lots of new friends. Like last semester, this semester will also be action-packed with many events, competitions and guest appearances. For example, in week 7, we will be graced again with the visit of renowned Australian educator Mr. John Fleming. Mr. Fleming is a deputy principal at Haileybury Melbourne and has been teaching in Australia for over 40 years. He is also an Australian government appointed education advisor and will come into primary classrooms to offer advice and feedback. In week 8, there is a planned excursion and in week 10 there is a planned sports carnival. Towards the end of this semester, we also hope to hold Haileyvision (an English song and performance competition) which has already become a Haileybury primary school tradition.

　　Haileyvision (English song and dance extravaganza) is planned for the latter half of this semester

　　This semester we will be continuing with our English performances and competitions at assembly on Fridays as well as the presentation of weekly merit awards to high achieving students. Last Friday, on the 22nd of February, we held our first assembly of the new semester with nine students from years 2,3,5 and 6 participating in a mock round 1 CCTV competition. In congruence with the requirements of the first round of the CCTV competition, students were given 60 seconds to speak on any topic of their choosing without the usage of notes or palm cards (many thanks to Mr. Jason who did a fantastic job as the timekeeper). Following their speeches, students were also asked questions from a panel of assessors (Mr. Williamson and Ms. Sanchez) regarding their speech. The audience was impressed with the English spoken fluency of our students and gave applause according to their appreciation or liking of each speech. Lower primary English teachers Mr. Rosenfield and Mr. Webb were given the arduous task of ranking the loudness of each applause. Finally, Mr. Rosenfield had the honour of announcing the names of the three students who had received loudest applause. Well done to all our participants and a special commendation must go out to the winners who are listed below:

　　本學(xué)期我們將繼續(xù)在周五的集會(huì)上進(jìn)行英語表演和比賽，并向表現(xiàn)優(yōu)異的學(xué)生頒發(fā)每周優(yōu)秀獎(jiǎng)。上周五(2月22日)我們舉辦了新學(xué)期的次集會(huì)，分別來自2、3、5、6年級(jí)的九名學(xué)生參加了模擬中央電視臺(tái)比賽。為了符合該比賽輪的要求，學(xué)生們需要在不使用任何筆記或手卡的前提下，完成60秒的自選話題的演講(在這里感謝杰森教師出色地完成了計(jì)時(shí)工作)。演講結(jié)束后，學(xué)生們還要回答評(píng)估小組(威廉姆教師和桑切斯教師)針對(duì)他們所做演講提出的問題。觀眾對(duì)我們學(xué)生的英語口語之流利印象深刻，并根據(jù)對(duì)每一次演講的欣賞及喜愛程度獻(xiàn)上掌聲。低年級(jí)英語教師羅森菲爾德先生和韋伯先生被賦予了一項(xiàng)重要的任務(wù)，即對(duì)每一次掌聲的響度進(jìn)行排名。最后，羅森菲爾德老師榮幸地宣布了三名收獲了最熱烈掌聲的學(xué)生的名字。所有的參加者都表現(xiàn)得非常出色。在此我要特別表揚(yáng)一下三位獲獎(jiǎng)?wù)撸?/p>

　　The first round of the CCTV competition took place at our school on the 28th of February. Given the success of our primary school students in this national English competition last year, it was decided that all students be given the opportunity to participate in the initial rounds of the competition this year. Due to the large number of entrants, the speeches had to be delivered in classrooms this year as the auditorium does not have enough capacity to hold all our students. In round one, our students spoke for a maximum of 60 seconds on any topic of their choosing without the usage of notes or palm cards. If they had a talent performance, this could only be for a maximum of 30 seconds with the English speech being the other 30 seconds. After the presentation, they were also asked some questions by the CCTV judges. I am pleased to announce that 68% of all our students have progressed onto round two. In round two, students will be given 60 seconds to answer the ‘My Dream’ topic without the usage of any notes or palm cards. They will then be asked questions by the judges on the topic for another 30 seconds. Students are also able to perform a talent show during this second round, but the talent performance must be closely related to the topic of their speech. We hope you will continue to support your child in this renowned national English competition and we trust our students will continue to shine brightly this year.

　　中央電視臺(tái)(希望之星)輪比賽將于2月28日在我校舉行。鑒于我們小學(xué)部學(xué)生去年在全國英語競(jìng)賽中獲得的優(yōu)異成績(jī)，校方?jīng)Q定給予所有學(xué)生參加今年首輪比賽的機(jī)會(huì)。由于參加者眾多，校劇院無法同時(shí)容納所有學(xué)生，所以今年的演講將會(huì)在教室里進(jìn)行。在輪中，學(xué)生需要在不使用筆記或手卡的情況下，根據(jù)他們自由選擇的主題發(fā)言，做一個(gè)不超過60秒的演講。如果他們有才藝展示，要確保展示時(shí)間控制在30秒內(nèi)，為英語演講留足三十秒的時(shí)間。演講結(jié)束后，每一位選手還要回答評(píng)委們提出的一些問題。我很高興地宣布，68%的小學(xué)孩子成功進(jìn)入第二輪。在第二輪中，學(xué)生們將有60秒的時(shí)間，在不使用任何筆記或手卡的前提下，針對(duì)“我的夢(mèng)想”這一主題進(jìn)行作答。然后，評(píng)委們將在30秒內(nèi)就這個(gè)話題提問。學(xué)生們也可以在第二輪表演才藝，但才藝表演必須與他們演講的主題密切相關(guān)。我們希望您繼續(xù)支持您的孩子參加這項(xiàng)的全國英語比賽，我們相信我們的學(xué)生今年會(huì)繼續(xù)大放異彩。

　　English Reading fluency is a priority in the primary school. The reading buddy program started in December 2017 and will continue into this semester. Every week, many middle school mentors will come into the primary school to help our lower primary school students read. The collaboration between the two sub schools has been a success as it has provided intensive language support to our students. It has also given our middle school students an opportunity to give back to the school community by providing a valued service. In addition to the lower primary buddy reading program, we have around 1000 books in our primary school library which are available for our students to borrow on a weekly basis. Titles include the Oxford Reading Tree series (levels 1-9), Step into Reading (levels 1-4), the I can read series (Adventures of Biscuit, Berenstain bears, Splat cat, Marley the Dog, Little Critters, Flat Stanley), National geographic readers and Usborne First Library. Students may borrow one book at a time from their English teachers who will manage the borrowing and returning of these books. If a student would like to borrow a specific book or more than one book at a time, special permission may be granted, however, please note that if a student loses a book, the guardian of the student will be required to pay the cost of replacement before the student will be allowed to borrow again. Please look at the table below to see which International English teacher is managing the graded reading of your child.

　　Our primary school parents were treated to a special guest lecture in the auditorium at lunch time on the 22nd of February. The lecture was presented by Ms. Liu Ru who is a practitioner at First Central Hospital. The title of her presentation was ‘The Skill and Practice of Love’. Ms. Liu Ru’s speech focused on clinical and experiential understandings of physical development and parenting issues such as communication, managing emotions, internet safety, issues related to the usage of mobile phones, stranger danger, depression, status, sexuality, peer pressure, self-image, adolescence, academic issues and respect. She stressed that what is shown on the outside is the direct result of what is happening on the inside, so it is important to fix problems before they get out of control. She advised parents to accept their child’s way of expressing him or herself but to manage or deal with the issues that their child may be experiencing in an educated and appropriate way. Ms. Liu said that contrary to popular belief, parenting is not easy and that parents should take lessons on how to improve in their parenting. Overall, the talk was very interesting, and I am sure that much of the advice given will be taken on board by our parents.

　　2月22日中午，我們的小學(xué)家長(zhǎng)在劇院迎來一次特別的客座演講。講座由中心醫(yī)院的執(zhí)業(yè)醫(yī)師劉茹女士主持。她的演講題目是《愛的技巧和實(shí)踐》。劉茹女士的演講主要探討針對(duì)一系列問題的臨床判斷以及經(jīng)驗(yàn)理解。內(nèi)容包括身體發(fā)育以及養(yǎng)育問題，她強(qiáng)調(diào)，外部所顯示的是內(nèi)部所發(fā)生事情的直接結(jié)果，因此在問題失控之前解決問題很重要。她建議父母接受孩子表達(dá)自己的方式，但要以教導(dǎo)性的、適當(dāng)?shù)姆绞教幚砘蛱幚砗⒆涌赡苡龅降膯栴}。劉女士說，與人們普遍認(rèn)為的相反，養(yǎng)育孩子并不容易，家長(zhǎng)應(yīng)該學(xué)習(xí)如何提高他們的養(yǎng)育能力�？偟膩碚f，這次談話很有意思，我相信我們的父母會(huì)采納很多建議。

　　It was great to see you at the primary school English, Chinese and Mathematics parent teacher presentations on the 22nd of February. Core subject teachers from years 1-6 were given 15 minutes each to summarise what they had taught last semester and outline the syllabus for the new semester. Parents were also given opportunity at the end of each teacher’s presentation to ask questions about the progress of their children and to voice any questions or concerns they may have had. The meeting provided parents with an opportunity to touch base again with their homeroom teachers and their subject teachers. It was also an excellent opportunity for our new families to meet and greet their subject teachers for the first time and to exchange information. Overall, it was a calm and relaxed afternoon with many parents leaving not only satisfied with the progress of their children but also with a better understanding of what their children are learning on a day to day basis. Many thanks must also go to Jinny Guo (year 5) and Penelope Weng (year 6) who assisted our international teachers with translation duties. We look forward to collaborating and cooperating with you this semester to ensure that your child continues to grow and improve with each passing day.

　　Although we are only in the second week of school, the primary school is already moving forward in leaps and bounds. The children have already chosen their new club activities for the new semester and primary school parents have already met up with their homeroom teachers and subject teachers. We have started strongly so let us continue working together to make this semester another excellent semester of teaching and learning.

　　雖然只是本學(xué)期的第二周，但小學(xué)部已經(jīng)在大跨步前進(jìn)。孩子們已經(jīng)為新學(xué)期選擇了新的社團(tuán)活動(dòng)，小學(xué)家長(zhǎng)們已經(jīng)與他們的班主任和學(xué)科老師見面了。我們有一個(gè)很好的開始，就讓我們一起努力，讓所有學(xué)生與教師在這一學(xué)期繼續(xù)成長(zhǎng)。
